Intro to my blog

Hi, I'm Michelle from Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm a Spanish major graduating in 2010. Nutrition, health, and science have always interested me. I like traveling, reading and listening to music.

On May 16, 2008 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 20. I had all the classic symptoms of thirst and weight loss, tested positive for all the autoantibodies and had an AlC of 14%.

On January 8, 2009 I eliminated grain, dairy, and legumes from my diet and the results have been remarkable. Only after a few weeks my insulin needs dropped dramatically and after six months on the diet I quit taking insulin altogether.

I am writing this blog because I want other type 1 diabetics to know about the benefits of the diet. It's helped me and I believe it could help others. I will be posting about my progress on the diet, lab results (such as AlC's, autoantibodies, C-peptide), research studies and articles about type 1 diabetes, and recipes.

Feel free to leave comments and questions or reach me by email at michellestype1@gmail.com

Thanks,

Michelle

  1. Michelle,

Found you via Robb Wolf's site. That's awesome that you are shot free! Out of curiosity, do you CrossFit at all? any exercise? I'm wondering how the shot free thing and exercise works for ya.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  2. Hi Chris, thanks! I'm actually not a big exerciser, trainer, nor CrossFitter. I do more low to moderate exercises like walking, playing tennis, biking, or yoga most days of the week for about 30 minutes. I should exercise more intensely and I use to much more for blood glucose control but now I don't have to as much after going paleo for so long. Are you a type 1 diabetic too?

  3. Yep, Type I as of 2003 when I was 33. Various exercises have weird behavior on my BS, long distance running gave me lows, and CrossFit gives me highs. When I'm good enough about being paleo, I'm able to lose the Novolog shots except during CrossFit workouts, and I can cut way back on the Lantus. You have a very inspiring story, and make me wanna do better on my diet, hopefully more diabetics get wind of it!

  7. Congratulations Michelle!

If in the future you find that you have any relapse of symptoms, you my find a stricter approach necessary, as I, Lex Rooker, Geoffrey Purcell and other Paleo dieters have found. At that point you may wish to read Lex Rooker's journal and his other excellent posts at a couple of different forums easily found by googling his name.

The work of Dr. Stephen Phinney and Dr. Jay Wortman is also worth checking out.

  8. Hi Phil, thanks for the help. How long did the regular paleo diet work for you?

  9. Applaud, greatly, what you have done but don’t confuse controlling your metabolic malfunction with a cure. You still own diabetes, Lock, Stock and Barrel. A cure means you could go off Paleo or eat (poorly) like other folks and not in the short run effect your insulin production and glucose control. Please keep up the great work but unlike cancer, it can’t be cut out or radiated- only controlled.

  10. It worked very well for me for about 10 months, then things very gradually started to worsen over the next 4 years until I eliminated anything that I was not sure was Paleo or was clearly cheating (nightshades, winter squashes, dried fruit, fruit juices, tropical fruits, all sweeteners including agave nectar and honey, etc.) and eventually found I did best on a mostly-raw carnivorous Paleo diet.
